Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This senior level Laboratory Safety Industrial Hygienist position supports the goal of providing the UMD research community with the guidance and tools they need to manage safety in their laboratories. The Senior Laboratory Safety Industrial Hygienist will provide a high level of technical support to researchers and will assist the Laboratory Safety Manager in identifying gaps in the current research safety program and developing programs to narrow those gaps.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Bachelors degree and 5 years experience in health and safety or a Masters degree and 3 years experience in health and safety.

Candidates must:

• Possess knowledge and practical experience in a health and safety programs within a research laboratory environment.
• Have knowledge of OSHA and other relevant regulations, standards and guidance.
• Have knowledge of current laboratory safety practices and the health risks associated with hazardous chemical substances as well as physical hazards.
• Possess experience in conducting hazard assessments related to research operations and procedures.
• Have experience in developing and presenting effective training programs.
• Have strong written and oral communication skills and be able to effectively work with regulatory agencies and institutional staff at all levels.
• Have knowledge of incident response procedures and experience in the investigation of research related incidents and emergencies.
• Possess computer experience including at a minimum, the use of internet browsers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).


• Bachelors degree or higher in Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, or other related discipline.
• Practical health and safety experience within a university research environment.
• Certification as a CIH, CSP or other safety/environmental accreditation organizations.

Physical Demands

Must be capable of working in temperature extremes and environments that are uncomfortable and that present potential health risks if appropriate protections are not utilized.

Must pass an annual physical examination to utilize protective equipment, including respiratory protection. Must be capable of lifting equipment and materials up to fifty pounds.

Will be required to occasionally work off-hours and be subject to on call capacity to respond to and investigate incidents involving hazardous material.
