Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Perform repair and routine maintenance (A, B, C, and D service, seasonal service, DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections) on vehicles. Inspects and tests vehicles, automotive systems and related equipment. Diagnoses malfunctions with air brake, hydraulic and electrical systems; diesel engines and transmissions and makes repairs including welding and fabrication, replacement and assemblage of parts. Tune and adjust both 2 and 4 cycle gasoline and diesel engines of automotive and heavy duty transit buses. Performs work using accepted techniques and available equipment, parts and supplies. This may involve experience with O/I communications systems and ablity to diagnose problems using computer equipment to interface with Electronic Control Units. (ECU’s). Performs preventative maintenance such as fueling, oil changing and lubrication and cleaning. Document all maintenance work using appropriate forms. Record all parts used, labor hours and vehicle scheduling. Maintains tools and equipment of the automotive trade and assists in maintaining an orderly maintenance area by cleaning up after each job and keeping tools and parts organized. Participate in on-call rotation for emergency maintenance response. May also be asked to participate in the training of student maintenance assistants.

Minimum Qualifications:

Four years progressively responsible experience in servicing, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles or motor equipment.

The hours for the shift are 10:30 pm – 7:00 am (Sunday – Thursday):

Sunday-Monday 10:30pm – 7:00am
Monday-Tuesday 10:30pm – 7:00am
Tuesday-Wednesday 10:30pm – 7:00am
Wednesday-Thursday 10:30pm – 7:00am
Thursday-Friday 10:30pm – 7:00am

Physical Demands

The auto services mechanic job is physically demanding. You spend much of your day on your feet or in uncomfortable positions when completing repairs. You also typically work routinely with tools and greasy car parts, which is uncomfortable, and often wearing on your hands and arms.
