Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland is seeking a dynamic individual to join the department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability & Risk.

The Assistant Director for Risk Management is a key leader within the Department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability and Risk and is responsible for oversight and direction in the areas of occupational safety and health, workers’ compensation, insurance, and loss control.

S/he is expected to work closely with risk management partners within the department and across campus to ensure a coordinated approach to assessing, mitigating, and monitoring risks that may affect the achievement of the University’s strategic objectives.

Responsibilities include:
• Responsible for developing and overseeing strategic direction and implementation of programs in occupational safety & health, workers’ compensation, insurance, incident investigation, and loss control.
• Partner with stakeholders and customers throughout the university to help drive a culture of risk awareness and proactive risk mitigation.
• Support and assist operational leaders across campus in the management of key risks within their area of responsibility.
• Participate on and lead committees that focus on risk management. Responsible for making recommendations and technical presentations to senior management based on accepted safety and risk management methodology.
• Provide compliance oversight and auditing of the university’s summer youth programs.
• Assist programs with compliance with State of Maryland requirements for academic-unit sponsored youth programs.
• Support the development and implementation of an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework to examine sources of programmatic and operation risk to the university.
• Develop and implement tools which enhance the ERM framework and help identify, assess, monitor, communicate and report on key risk areas.
• Develop and implement methodology for quantifying risks to the university.
• Manage, supervise, and provide leadership to professional staff.
• Provide oversight as needed to staff in developing and implementing programs in occupational safety and health, workers’ compensation and insurance.
• Maintain and control budget related to operating unit.
• Work with Facilities Management to determine priorities for hazard abatement funding including identification and prioritization of projects, and preparation of proposals and annual reports to university oversight committees.
• Works with project managers and customers to ensure project completion meets safety and health standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 15 years of professional level work experience in risk management or occupational safety and health.
• Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience required.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with diverse audiences at every level of the university.
• Be capable of managing and supervising a professional staff including the effective planning, prioritization, delegation and oversight of necessary programs.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment.


• Masters degree.
• Ideal candidates will have strong analytical abilities and project management skills.
CIH, CSP, ARM or CRM or other equivalent certifications.

Physical Demands

The incumbent must be available for emergency response at any time. Able to perform extensive standing, walking, climbing, and lifting. Respirator use may be required.
