Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The School of Public Health undergraduate student body encompasses approximately 2500 students in four majors, of which about half represent diverse racial and ethnic groups. The School of Public Health is currently ranked #22 according to U.S. News and Word Reports. The School has experienced incredible growth over the last several years. It is an exciting and vibrant community made up of faculty, staff and students who are passionate about public health. The School seeks an Assistant Director to share in this passion and to support a wide range of duties in the SPH Center for Academic Success and Achievement (CASA).

The Assistant Director will oversee and manage retention efforts in the School by supporting/advising students on academic probation, academic dismissal or at-risk students. S/he will coordinate closely with the university’s student success office, undergraduate studies and other offices across campus.

The Assistant Director will lead our SPH scholarship committee which includes advertising available scholarships to students and working with the committee to select award recipients. S/he will be in charge of coordinating administrative advising responsibilities, examples include benchmark reviews, senior audits, and graduation clearances. The Assistant Director will also represent SPH at multiple committees across campus collaborating with other university representatives.

Other duties in the office include, but are not limited to, teaching a section of UNIV100, responding to exception to policy requests, assisting students in developing 4 year plans, student programming, and representing SPH on committees across campus.

The Assistant Director will report directly to the Director, CASA and supervise 2 professional staff members and 3 graduate students in the office.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Master’s degree required in student affairs or related field.

Minimum of seven (7) years working in higher education/student affairs.

One (1) to (3) years of managerial/supervisory experience; experience training and mentoring others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, developing and maintaining strong relationships with students, faculty and staff within SPH and across campus; strong vision for ensuring adherence to undergraduate policies and procedures; understanding and appreciating the needs and backgrounds of our diverse student population; be able to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities, possess strong organizational skills and be enthusiastic and passionate about students and advising.


Experience with the UMD Student Information System (SIS) is preferred.

Familiarity and experience with other UMD online advising software is preferred including Advise on the Web, Uachive and Brio.

Physical Demands

Office environment. Ability to sit for extended hours, visual acuity to read data on reports and computer screens, ability to type on keyboard for extended periods.
