Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

• The Graduate Assistant for Information Technology Support will work under the general supervision of the SPH IT Specialist to provide prompt and courteous day-to-day technical support to the School of Public Health (SPH) faculty, staff and graduate students. This is a position that will deal directly with the occupants of the SPH building. Responsible for day-to-day desktop support, which includes software, hardware and network issues. Will provide support for all audio/visual technology throughout the SPH classrooms and conference rooms, assistance with network/telecom orders, computer inventory, and maintaining IT policies and procedures as they relate to hardware, software and servers. Install and implement hardware and software according to department standards and procedures, including assistance with Windows and Macintosh computing platforms, troubleshooting, researching and resolving network support issues from customers. These issues could include network performance, internet connectivity, and network printing. Troubleshoot the customers’ support requests using the available tools and resources while following the appropriate processes and procedures of the IT Specialist. Keep accurate, detailed notes.
• A web based ticketing system manages support and work assignment. The hourly student employee for Information Technology Support will be responsible for excellent customer service, from initial contact through troubleshooting and researching to final problem resolution. Strong technical, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential. Must also possess the ability to multitask and work well under pressure to meet deadlines.
• Willingness and availability to work on evening shifts is desirable.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Must be enrolled in a UMCP graduate program
• Technical Knowledge is required for Windows and Apple/Mac operating systems as well as applications.
• Strong communication skills, written and oral.
• Strong customer service skills
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
• Must be able to work concurrently on multiple projects, adjust to occasional changes in priorities, and respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations


• Previous experience supporting Windows Server 2003/2008 /2012 and Active Directory.
• Experience with Windows XP, Windows 7, Mac OS X. Linux and related systems (e.g. Ubuntu) preferred.
• Experience supporting MS Office 2003-2013 and other office productivity applications.
• Knowledge of Cisco VPN, Remote Desktop Connection, network backup solutions, antivirus and malware solutions, DNS, DHCP, etc.
• Experience purchasing, installing, and configuring graphics cards.
• Virtual computers and/or servers (i.e. Hyper-V, Parallels, Boot Camp, etc.) Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to direct, assist, guide, and share information with both technical and non-technical personnel alike.
Note: The work may require ability to lift and transport computer equipment of various size and weight.
