Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Responsible for providing mechanical (HVAC and plumbing) engineering input during the planning stages and create design and construction documents of renovation and small building projects estimated to cost less than $5 million. Major functions include preparing drawings, utilizing AutoCAD, and providing construction administration support. Provides mechanical reviews for designs developed by IDC firms as well as peer reviews for in-house projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience with designing building HVAC systems and with mechanical piping systems (steam, chilled water, domestic water, sanitary, and storm).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must have knowledge of building mechanical and plumbing systems.

Must have knowledge of building HVAC and plumbing systems, including heat pumps, DX systems, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, air handling and fan coil units, and constant and variable volume distribution systems, heat exchangers and thermal storage systems.

Must have working knowledge of heating/cooling calculation software such as Trane Trace or carrier HAP.

Must know codes, products and best current practices in the installation of mechanical HVAC and structural systems.

Must have ability to design mechanical and plumbing systems and coordinate them with other building systems.

Must be an effective communicator, both in oral and written form.

Must be able to work independently and establish work priorities.

Must have the ability to use computers and be proficient in AutoCAD.


EIT completion is desirable. Experience working on higher education projects is desirable.

Additional Certifications:

Incumbent will be required to travel to meetings and project sites; if driving a State vehicle, must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent with fewer than 6 points.

Physical Demands

This work will be performed primarily in an office environment. Incumbent will be expected to climb ladders, move around construction sites, and navigate tight spaces typically found in mechanical, electrical, and utility rooms.
