Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This position serves as the Safety Specialist II and reports to the Occupational Safety & Health Manager in the Department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability & Risk.

This position is responsible for the evaluation and implementation of multiple occupational safety programs across the campus with an emphasis on evaluation of work centers for hazards including conducting site inspections and monitoring workplace exposures.

Incumbent will be responsible for working with colleges and departments across the campus including off-site research farms. Program responsibilities will include implementation of programs as required by federal, state and university regulations and requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in safety, engineering, industrial hygiene, chemistry or related field from an accredited college/university.
• Minimum of 3-5 years progressive experience in safety and health is required.
• Experience with Occupational Safety & Health program development & implementation and experience working with regulatory agencies is required.

The individual must:
• Have the ability to collect and analyze safety-related data to identify risks and compliance with applicable regulations and standards of practice.
• Have experience auditing occupational safety and health programs.
• Be able to effectively work with other units at the university and within Environmental Safety.
• Be able to effectively prioritize project work and goals.
• Have strong verbal and writing skills, including the preparation of clear and complete reports for non-EHS staff.
• Have significant training presentation experience and be capable of developing, revising, and presenting training programs using various Information Technology media (e.g., MS PowerPoint).
• Will occasionally be required to work off-hours and be subject to on-call capacity to respond to and investigate incidents occurring at the university or affecting university personnel.


Preferred Qualifications:
• Professional health & safety program experience in an organization with a strong, positive safety culture is preferred.
The candidate should:
• Possess a strong technical background in safety as well as successful hands-on experience in the development and implementation of applicable compliance and evaluation programs in a large and decentralized environment.
• Have experience implementing electrical safety and confined space programs.
• Have experience in emergency response and the investigation of emergencies and incidents.
• Spanish speaking a plus.
• Indoor air quality investigations and exposure monitoring or industrial hygiene experience a plus.

AHERA Asbestos Building Inspector – preferred

Physical Demands

Must be capable of working in temperature extremes and environments that are uncomfortable and that present potential health risks if appropriate protections are not utilized.

Must pass an annual physical examination to utilize protective equipment, including respiratory protection. Must be capable of lifting equipment and materials up to fifty pounds.

Will be required to occasionally work off-hours and be subject to on call capacity to respond to and investigate incidents involving hazardous material.
