Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The dual certification undergraduate teacher preparation program in Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education seeks an experienced and energetic individual to serve as the Early Childhood Special Education Professional Development (PD) Coordinator for the program. This individual will serve as a liaison between the program and its early childhood and early childhood special education field placement sites, with a focus on engaging in a wide range of placement-related activities including teacher candidate supervision, mentor and supervisor recruitment and training, and teacher candidate evaluation.

The University of Maryland (UMD) Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education (Pre-K-3rd)/Early Childhood Special Education (birth through age 8) (EC/ECSE) is an intensive, cross-departmental teacher education program between the Departments of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education (CHSE) and Human Development and Quantitative Methodology (HDQM). It was designed for individuals who are interested in teaching young children with and without disabilities. In addition to the growing number of young children with recognized disabilities, a unique focus of the program is an emphasis on preparing teachers to work with young children who are culturally and linguistically diverse and at environmental risk due to poverty, immigrant status, and other contextual factors.

The person who fills this position will be expected to work collaboratively with faculty from both departments (CHSE and HDQM), as well as with school system colleagues. In addition, this individual will be asked to assist in expanding the network of special education field placement sites and mentors in order to provide candidates with quality early childhood special education field experiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Minimum of a Master’s degree in the area of special education
• 2 or more years of experience working in supervision-related activities with teacher preparation programs (e.g., placement, supervision, mentoring, evaluation of teacher candidates)
• 2 or more years of experience working in public school settings with children with disabilities
• 2 or more years of experience working in an early childhood special education setting
• Evidence of the ability to multi-task and work with an array of stakeholders
• Excellent oral and written communication skills


• Master’s degree in early childhood special education
• 2 or more years of experience working in schools, programs, or communities with young children who are culturally and linguistically diverse and at environmental risk due to poverty, immigrant status, and other contextual factors
• Experience preparing and delivering professional development to pre-service and/or in-service teachers
• Experience working in systems for assessment of teacher preparation candidates, such as edTPA
• An established record of supervision and collaboration in the professional development school communities
