Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at the University of Maryland is pleased to announce a search for a non tenure-track position at at the rank of Faculty Assistant. We seek innovative and entrepreneurial design thinkers and makers with expertise in digital design media and fabrication.

The School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Architecture, as well as graduate programs in Urban Planning, Historic Preservation, and Real Estate Development, dual masters degree programs, and an interdisciplinary PhD program, and is home to the National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education, The Environmental Finance Center and the Colvin Institute. The School has been designated as a U.S. Economic Development Administration University Center. Located inside the Beltway just outside Washington DC, the University of Maryland participates in the intellectual life of the nation’s capital and benefits from close proximity to research institutes and funding agencies.

The Architecture Program has a national reputation for design excellence in building craft, urban design, and sustainability as evidenced by its award-winning comprehensive design studio and advanced technology sequence, its numerous awards in the arena of urban design, and WaterShed, first-place winner at the 2011 United States Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. The School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, in collaboration with the A. James Clark School of Engineering and the College of Agriculture, are currently building interdisciplinary research capacity in the area of Sustainability in the Built Environment with a cluster hire leading to the establishment of a center that will offer Architecture Program faculty opportunities for engagement in collaborative research.

The individual who is appointed to this position will provide integrated support for the instruction of digital tools and fabrication throughout the architecture program curricula with special emphasis on design studio.

Develop student workshops seminars, and training in digital design media and fabrication.

Oversee and maintain the architecture programs fabrication labs.

Collaborate with information technology staff.

Work closely with faculty to advance digital design media and fabrication capability.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates shall possess a minimum of bachelor degree in Architecture and/or degree(s) in digital design media and fabrication.

Successful candidates will demonstrate potential for excellence in creative and/or professional activities. The candidate shall be prepared to offer specific insight in to how her or his creative and/or professional activities contribute to and expand the Architecture Program’s vision and mission.


Masters of fine arts with an emphasis in digital fabrication.
