Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Under the supervision of the Manager of Payroll and Benefits, the coordinator is responsible for accurate and timely processing of payroll activities including: creating, modifying and monitoring appointments in PHR system. Provides support for all aspects of personnel and benefits activities. Will handle departmental and departmental centers’ payroll, visas, website and form management systems. Must be able to handle high-volume, deadline driven, multiple priorities at one time.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for a degree.
At least six (6) years (with a High School Diploma or GED); four (4) years (with an associate degree) or two (2) years (with a bachelor’s degree) and progressively responsible experience in human resources and/or payroll.
Experience must include working with electronic payroll and human resource systems

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of Human Resource management principles and practices.
- Skill in performing basic mathematical computations.
- Skill in organizing and executing multiple assignments under specific time constraints.
- Ability to understand and interpret policies and procedures in the areas of finance, human resources, payroll and sponsored programs.
- Ability to prepare and present a variety of payroll and human resource presentations and reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate office equipment, computers, and related software.
- Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential materials/matters with discretion & tact.
- Ability to be flexible in managing multiple activities and deadlines.


- Experience with UMD policies, procedures.
- Experience working in higher education.
- Experience using the university’s software such as PHR, ARES, Elf, eTerp, KUALI and WOW reporting software is preferred.
- Strong preference for experience in working with international visitors, maintaining and updating foreign nationals’ documentation including Visa tracking and requirements, treaty benefits and notifications.
- Strong preference given for experience in processing new J-1 and H1B Visas

Additional Certifications:

Preferred- PHR (Professional in Human Resources) or SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources)

Physical Demands
