The Engineering & Energy Unit consists of 3 focus areas: Engineering Services, Utilities and Facilities Performance.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Engineering & Energy unit is seeking a motivated, hands-on engineer to perform utility and building mechanical system and equipment infrastructure assessments and oversee the design and replacement / upgrade of mechanical equipment and systems. Incumbent performs project management responsibilities for mechanical system upgrade efforts.

Provides analysis, design and construction support for Design & Construction (D&C), Engineering & Energy (E&E), Operations & Maintenance (O&M) and independent college projects and construction activities. Assures that project energy performance complies with the University energy conservation and reduction goals.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar related technology field and seven (7) years of experience. At least five (5) years of experience must be: in the assessment and design of building and infrastructure mechanical systems, including chillers, boilers, pumps, air handling units, fan coil units, chilled and heating water, steam, DX air conditioning, domestic water and specialty plumbing systems, laboratory ventilation and pressurization and fume hoods and biosafety cabinets. Experience should be in performing similar duties with mechanical utility and building systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Dynamic individual who possesses knowledge and experience assessing, designing and troubleshooting mechanical systems. Must be knowledgeable of building, mechanical and energy codes, products and current best practices for mechanical systems. Must be an effective communicator, both in oral and written form. Must have the ability to use computers and be adept at using AutoCAD, heating & cooling load word processing and spreadsheet software. Must have demonstrated ability to devise innovative solutions to problems and develop relationships with clients. Independent decision maker.

Preferences:

-Professional Engineer.
-Master’s degree.
-Knowledge and use of hydraulic evaluation software, such as Termis.
-Knowledge and use of energy modelling software.

Additional Certifications:

Incumbent must possess a driver’s license, as duties require the incumbent to travel to and from meetings and project sites both on and off campus. If driving a State vehicle, incumbent must possess a valid MD Class C driver’s license or equivalent with fewer than six (6) points.

The approved salary range for this vacancy is: $89,566 – $111,956.

Physical Demands

Must be able and willing to perform field investigations; have the ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery. To work from ladders; to manipulate equipment, tools and supplies; to have the manual dexterity to operate a computer; to wear and work in personal protective equipment (safety footwear, hard hat, protective eye and ear wear, etc.); to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to lift 70 pounds. While the physical demands listed above may be experienced, the position is primarily an office environment. Position is classified as Non-Essential.
