Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland is seeking a dynamic individual to join the Office of Community Engagement.

The Community Engagement Media and Digital Communications Coordinator will support strategic initiatives related to public relations, social media and various areas of communications to promote programs and activities sponsored and/or endorsed by the Office of Community Engagement (OCE), the University community, and off-campus partners.
This is a one-year assignment to develop more professionals in the area of town/gown relations.
The Coordinator works closely with departments as well as the Office of Community Engagement’s Director and staff. S/He also recruits student volunteers/interns to assist with the work of the Office.
Due to the nature of the work in community engagement efforts, this position frequently has evening and weekend obligations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required.

• Minimum of 1 year working while as a full-time student at a higher education institution; involvement with one or more community-based projects.
• Ability to manage multiple projects of varying scale, meet deadlines and work independently.
• Emphasis in journalism, multimedia, communications, nonprofit writing, public relations or marketing is highly desired.
• This is an entry-level professional position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• S/He must be a self-starter who will embrace hard work, exhibit a can-do-attitude and thrive in an evolving work environment. Candidate must feel comfortable in interacting with a wide range of civic, community, businesses and non-profit organizations.
• Strong work-ethic in which “going above and beyond” is standard; passion for community-based initiatives.
• Display ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written, verbal, and video format. Ability to produce clear and compelling pieces, with close attention to audience, goals, messaging, tone, and accuracy.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Word, and PowerPoint.
• Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite: Acrobat, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro. Other similar photo and video editing software.
• Experience with social media platforms: Hootsuite, Eventbrite, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, Flickr.
• Experience with administrative and team collaboration tools such as Slack and Google Drive.
• Web Management Systems: Drupal, Google Analytics.
• Demonstrate ability to develop, innovative and creative media content across website and social media platforms.


• Experience in developing and maintaining web content and social media strategy for an organization.
• Development of social media strategy to increase awareness of community partnerships and public service efforts.
• Experience or desire for experience on web/social analytics platform (HubSpot, Google Analytics, etc.) is a plus.
• Graphic design and webmaster knowledge or experience is a plus.
• Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.

Physical Demands

• This position may require lifting and moving of boxes, tables, chairs, etc. for the set up and break down of booths and displays at community events.
• Must be willing to work flexible hours, with frequent evenings, and weekend obligations.
