Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Department of Government and Politics (GVPT) currently has over 200 active appointments. The Business Manager will manage the human resources and payroll for the Department and will serve as the primary point of contact for GVPT. S/he will also be responsible for the financial management of the Department’s Foundation accounts and the corresponding account within the Department. The Business Manager will also initiate all financial transactions on behalf of the Department, including but not limited to disbursement vouchers, invoices, requisitions, wire transfers, departmental encumbrances, procurement and travel expense statements. This position also serves at the Department’s office manager and is responsible for the Department’s keys, office equipment, computer inventory, parking codes as well as supervises GVPT’s front desk student workers.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. An equivalent combination of education and work/training experience may be substituted on a year to year basis for a combined total of 4 years.
- 2 years experience working in an office environment specific to administrative and/or financial management (i.e., accounting, payroll, procurement)
– Knowledge of basic accounting, strong IT skills
– the ability to work under pressure with a diverse group of colleagues.

Preferences:

- Master’s Degree preferred.
– University of Maryland experience preferred.
– Demonstrated knowledge of UMD software programs, such as PHR, Priority, KFS, WOW, e-terp, i-terp preferred.
ORA certification preferred.

Physical Demands

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and carry small parcels, packages and other items, to walk short distances and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and/or pick up materials.

Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
