Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Under direct supervision, employee in the classification is responsible for protecting the inhabitants and real property of the College Park campus and enforcing the laws of the United States & Maryland and the rules and regulations of the University of Maryland. Performs the assigned police mission within the unit and fulfills the duties of a uniformed police officer. The duties performed include, but are not limited to, the following: Vehicle, foot patrol or bike patrol; the enforcement of criminal and traffic laws; enforcement of University rules and regulations; documentation of work performed; handling property; training and education of members of the community, and serves as a community police officer.
Applicants must have a non-provisional police officer certification through the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission, or comparable police certification through another state (Comparative Compliance), must have successfully completed a Police Field Training Program, and must have successfully completed a probationary period with a police agency.
Applicants will be required to complete a comprehensive background investigation before appointment to this position. The employee will be expected to maintain his/her physical condition in order to successfully accomplish all assignments without jeopardizing his/her personal well-being or that of the community which he/she is expected to serve. Employee will be required to work rotating shifts and is considered an essential employee.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED AND Satisfactory completion of a Maryland Police Training Commission recognized or approved Police Academy Training program and successful completion of a Police Field Training program. OTHER: Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission and valid Maryland Non- commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.
