Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Maryland (UMIACS) is an interdisciplinary research organization focused on high performance computing, data intensive computing, and visual computing. The UMIACS Technical Staff is responsible for the computing environments for our 14 labs/centers and the research programs of over 70 faculty.

Responsibilities of the employee in this position are to provide support for research activities with expertise in network hardware and software infrastructure for our unique computing environments.

Duties will include, but will not be limited to:
● Setup, deploy and maintain network infrastructure from a wide variety of network
vendors.
● Analyze, diagnose and repair a number of different Wide Area Network (WAN)
connectivity issues (hardware and software issues).
● Provide Local Area Network configuration and troubleshooting assistance. This
includes support for client protocols, network based firewalls, virtual private
networks (VPNs) and link aggregations.
● Provide support for physical port adds, moves and changes for daily network
operations support.
● Participate in a help desk environment resolving basic information technology
tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s Degree
● Minimum 4 years hands on experience in supporting a medium to large network
environment
● Expertise in routing and network protocols for managing Local Area Networks
(LANs)
● Experience in both Windows and Linux client side networking troubleshooting
● Ability to establish strong working relationships with colleagues, faculty and staff
● Strong analytical and problem solving skills
● Excellent oral and written communications skills including ability to document highly technical content

Preferences:

● Experience with a software defined network environment
● Intrusion detection or intrusion protection systems exposure
● Integration expertise with network-attached storage systems

Physical Demands

Predominantly operates in an office environment. Dexterity and visual acuity necessary to operate and move computers is essential as is the ability to communicate verbally. Some periods of time may be spent in computer rooms and communications equipment spaces for installation, testing, and troubleshooting. Some work (less than 5%) requires moving and lifting of heavy equipment.
