Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Instructional Designer and eLearning Developer works collaboratively with faculty and staff to develop courses and eLearning modules that challenge students to assess complex business problems and deliver innovative solutions. As a member of a dynamic and highly skilled instructional design team, this individual is primarily charged with coaching faculty on active learning strategies and creating eLearning, interactive video, and other multimedia content to be used both synchronously and asynchronously. This position will provide faculty instructional design assistance including web-based applications and digital media. In addition, this individual coaches instructors on a variety of content authoring resources including, but not limited to, presentation, podcasting, animation, screen and video capture, and interactive multimedia. We are looking for a passionate, highly creative individual who can motivate and coax instructors to explore cutting-edge instructional design approaches for developing effective learning experiences for our students. The Instructional Designer and eLearning Developer will be a member of the Office of Transformational Learning in the Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and significant coursework in education, graphic design, instructional media or related field.

Minimum of 3 years’ experience in instructional design or instructional technology support.
Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with eLearning software such as Captivate or Storyline.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Extremely well-versed in application of design methodologies including but not limited to: ADDIE model, SAM, backward design, e-learning blueprint, and interactive learning experiences.
-Experience in designing authentic assessments and engaging course content.
-Ability to be creative, flexible and innovative in course design.
-Highly proficient computer skills to include MS Office Suite and learning management systems.
-Demonstrated expertise in using authoring tools such as Captivate and Storyline to create sophisticated adaptive learning content.
-Experience using and supporting a wide variety of animation and multimedia development tools such as Final Cut Pro, Audacity, Camtasia, Kaltura, SlideShare, and PowToon.
-Ability to provide instructional, curriculum, and technical design consulting services to subject matter experts (faculty).
-Experience in collaborating with teams and clients to manage expectations.
-Excellent English-language verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, superior organizational skills, self-direction, and motivation a must.
-Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet strict deadlines.


Master’s degree in instructional design, distance education or instructional technology.

Experience supporting blended, flipped, or online courses in a higher education environment preferred.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Training in design, psychology and data science will be beneficial but not necessary.
-Knowledge of Canvas learning management system preferred.
-Proficient in HTML, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere, and Final Cut Pro.
-Knowledge of instructional software such as TurningPoint, Respondus, Panopto, etc.
-Demonstrated commitment to customer satisfaction: exceptional skills in collaboration, consultation, communication, customer support, data analysis, and time management.
-Driven by standards of excellence and committed to continuous improvement. Ability to foster faculty enthusiasm for and engagement in the use of innovative technologies for teaching.
