Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Responsible for the management of the SSOBS-Operations & Field Support team.

Supervises network technicians responsible for components of the campus network infrastructure. This includes adds, moves, changes, maintenance of telephone, video, wireless, and data networks. Installation of cabling (fiber, twisted pair, broadband coax, etc) and equipment; management of telecommunication closets including security, power and environmental conditions.

Manage UMD Athletic events as needed for telecommunications and data needs.

Coordination of DIT telecommunication contractors.

Coordinate duct bank and cable locating with “Miss Utility”.

Coordinate required training (confined space, asbestos, etc).

Construction and Renovations: provide technical review and recommendations as necessary in conjunction with new and renovation construction. Coordinate and collaborate with DIT, University departments, and contractors to support construction projects.

This position is responsible for the 24/7 operation of DIT networks and infrastructure. It does require to be on-call and to coordinate actives required to maintain network operations to include data and telecommunications.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Seven years of telecommunications field experience in installation, maintenance and troubleshooting.

Experience with the coordination of activities involved in the development and deployment of complex communications systems used for providing information technology services is essential.

Knowledge of the numerous facets associated with installation and maintenance of communications networks, equipment, and systems in order to complete tasks involved is necessary. Excellent project organization and management skills are necessary.

The candidate must be willing to be on-call at all times and be willing to perform physically demanding tasks such as the lifting of heavy equipment and installation tools.

Preferences:

BICSI RCDD certificate preferred.

Physical Demands

Additional hours will be required at times and the incumbent will remain on an “on-call” basis at all times. Some stress factors may be involved due to the nature of the operation and the complexity of duties.

The tasks may be physically demanding when cable installation is involved. The use of heavy equipment and installation tools may be required.
