Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Associate Director of Learning Experience leads and manages the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center’s efforts to expand and support technology-enhanced courses (TEC) at the University of Maryland. TECs include online, blended, flipped, and MOOC courses, as well as face-to-face courses that significantly leverage educational technologies. The Associate Director of Learning Experience will routinely assess priorities and success metrics, align resources, ensure implementation, identify and communicate opportunities for innovation, and oversee a team of technology-enhanced course development professionals. The ideal candidate has extensive experience applying principles in learning science to TECs and demonstrated success in managing and growing an instructional design unit. This position performs a broad range of varied, non-routine activities associated with instructional design and development, program design and development, and internal and external partner and client communications. This position reports to the Director of Instructional Excellence and Innovation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Experience:
- Master’s degree in Learning Science, Curriculum and Instruction, Instructional Design, or other education-focused field.
– Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in instructional design, course development, and/or educational program development.
- Minimum of 5 years of personnel management experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex projects involving multiple stakeholders.
-Demonstrated ability to think strategically about complex issues, leading to thoughtful recommendations and action plans.
- Active eligibility to work in the United States.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of learning sciences, instructional design theory and methodology and best practices in pedagogy.
- Experience with learning management systems: e.g., Canvas LMS.
- Experience with web delivery and development tools, HTML, CSS, and digital media platforms.
- Knowledge of future trends and innovations in online and blended learning.
- Strong bias for action and ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to work in a team environment.
- Previous delivery of training and workshops (face to face and online)
- Ability and experience working independently and a track record of taking initiative in uncertain, dynamic environments.
- Ability to develop strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders to increase organizational efficiency and effectiveness.


Preferred Experience
-Ph.D. in Learning Science, Curriculum and Instruction, Instructional Design, or other education-focused field.
- Coursework with a focus on program evaluation and educational measurement.
- 5+ years managing instructional designers

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Understanding of copyright and accessibility regulations in a higher education and online setting.
- Data-driven approach to decision making.
- Experience with Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and Open Educational Resources (OER).
- Demonstrated professional experience at a Research University as an instructor, instructional designer or instructional coach.

Physical Demands

This is primarily an office position. However, this position does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings and programs on campus.
