Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Learning Experience Designer works collaboratively with faculty and staff to support the development of technology-enhanced courses (TEC) at the University of Maryland. TECs include online, MOOC, blended, and flipped courses, as well as face-to-face courses that significantly leverage educational technologies. This individual is primarily charged with coaching faculty on strategies for integrating interactive and engaging content, both synchronously and asynchronously. This position will provide faculty with group and one-on-one instructional design assistance including support for Canvas, LMS and other web-based applications. In addition, this individual coaches instructors on a variety of content authoring resources including (but not limited to) presentation, screen and video capture, and interactive multimedia.

We are looking for a passionate, highly creative individual who can motivate and coax instructors to explore new instructional design approaches for developing effective learning experiences for our students. The Learning Experience Designer will be a member of the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center and reports to the Associate Director of Learning Experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with significant coursework in education, graphic design, instructional media or related field; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience.

AND

3 years experience in instructional design or instructional technology support.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

- Extremely well versed in application of design methodologies including but not limited to: ADDIE model, SAM, backward design, e-learning blueprint, and interactive learning experiences.
- Experience in designing authentic assessments and engaging course content.
- Ability to be creative, flexible, and innovative in course design.
- Highly proficient computer skills to include MS and Google Office Suite, and learning management systems.
- Ability to provide instructional, curriculum and technical design consulting services to subject matter experts (faculty). Experience in collaborating with teams and clients to manage expectations.
- Excellent English-language verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, superior organizational skills, self- direction, and motivation a must.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, work independently, and meet strict deadlines.

Preferences:

Preferred Experience:
- Master’s degree in instructional design, distance education, or instructional technology.
- Experience supporting blended, flipped, or online courses in a higher education environment preferred.
- Training in design, psychology, and data science will be beneficial but not necessary.
- Knowledge of Canvas learning management system preferred.
- Proficient in HTML.
- Demonstrated expertise in using authoring tools such as Captivate and Storyline to create sophisticated adaptive learning content.
- Experience using and supporting a wide variety of multimedia development tools such as Audacity, Camtasia, Kaltura, SlideShare, PowToon, and streaming services.
- Knowledge of instructional software such as TurningPoint, Respondus, Panopto, etc.
- Demonstrated commitment to customer satisfaction: exceptional skills in collaboration, consultation, communication, customer support, data analysis, and time management.
- Driven by standards of excellence and committed to continuous improvement.
- Ability to foster faculty enthusiasm for and engagement in the use of innovative technologies for teaching.

Physical Demands

This is primarily an office position involving extensive use of desktop computers. However, this position does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings and programs on campus.
