Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Paralegal provides legal and administrative support services to all attorneys in the Office of General Counsel (OGC), the in-house office that provides legal support and guidance to the University of Maryland, College Park. The breadth of OGC’s legal practice requires the Paralegal to be capable and willing to support litigation/adversarial, corporate, transactional, and policy matters.
The Paralegal works under attorney supervision to draft legal documents; perform legal and factual research; prepare exhibits and presentations; analyze, preserve and maintain evidence; and communicate and interact with clients, outside counsel and third parties.
The Paralegal works on meeting the University’s obligations to respond to Public Information Act requests and to subpoenas/legal process. As the need arises, the Paralegal may be assigned primary responsibility for such matters.
The Paralegal provides general administrative support to the OGC attorneys when the Coordinator/Executive Assistant is unavailable or when the need arises. This may include working on the State of Maryland Financial Disclosure Program, the Employee Grievance Hearings process, the Public Safety Denial of Access Appeal process, and similar matters handled by OGC.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies, Business or related field.
Four or more years experience working with practicing attorneys in either a law firm or in-house setting. Demonstrated ability to perform legal research involving federal, state and administrative statutes, regulations and case law.
Proficiency using Microsoft Office suite of applications, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; Gmail and Google Calendar; and one or more legal document/case management applications. Ability to become proficient with new software applications as needed.
Excellent organizational, planning, problem solving and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to: communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; use discretion and good judgment; and work under multiple deadlines. Must interact courteously and professionally with all constituencies and maintain strict confidentiality regarding all OGC matters.


Working knowledge of the laws applicable to a research-intensive university.
