Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland is looking for a dynamic individual to serve as an Environmental Specialist I within the Environmental Affairs (EA) Unit of the Department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability & Risk (ESSR).
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Environmental Affairs, the primary function of the position will be the management of low-level radioactive wastes generated on the UMD campus. In addition, the Environmental Specialist may support a wide variety of state and federal environmental permits and programs including air, storm water, hazardous waste, and biological waste
The Environmental Specialist performs specialized environmental management functions that involve understanding environmental regulations, as well as data acquisition, computation, and data analysis.
In addition to typical office work, duties may involve the acquisition of data from the field, including radiation surveys, water monitoring, waste sample collection, and air emissions testing.
Other responsibilities include:
• Using and being responsible for equipment incident to the operation and function of the office including vehicles, technical monitoring and testing equipment and office equipment, with an estimated value of $200,000.
• Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, assist in the management of project budgets of approximately $50,000 annually and providing information for billing for services provided.
• Routinely interact with staff members from the Radiation Safety Unit. Contact may be in-person, as well as through email and telephone correspondence. The majority of contacts are made with faculty, staff, and laboratory personnel during waste collection, consultation, inspections, and data collection efforts.
• May interact with regulators from various environmental programs during audits or inspections.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Biology, Chemistry or related field and minimum of one (1) year of related experience that includes identifying, handling, and managing hazardous chemical, biological, and radioactive wastes. An equivalent combination of education and/or years of experience may be substituted for the degree.
Broad knowledge of multimedia environmental regulatory programs including hazardous waste, radioactive waste, biological waste, storm water, air, and pollution prevention and demonstrated knowledge of modern principles related to the recognition, prevention and control of environmental hazards.
Demonstrated experience in the use of environmental testing equipment and methods for the investigation and determination and analysis of hazards.
Candidate must be highly service oriented and possess strong record keeping skills and effective written and oral communication skills.
The employee is required to have a general knowledge of pertinent Federal and State of Maryland environmental regulations, policies, and directives.
Valid Maryland Driver’s license will be required.
Ability to pass medical exam for strenuous work with hazardous material and the use of respirators and maintain 40 hour hazardous waste operations and emergency response certification.


Experience with the collection, segregation, packing, and inventory of radioactive and mixed wastes.
Experience maintaining and updating a database of radioactive and mixed wastes that are being stored prior to off-site disposal, sewer disposal, or on-site decay-in-storage.
Experience performing sewer disposal and decay-in-storage of radioactive and mixed wastes.
Experience conducting surveys of radioactive material storage areas.
Knowledge of regulations pertaining to the handling, transportation, storage, and disposal of radioactive wastes.
Experience with collection, handling, segregation, packing, and inventory of biological and chemical wastes. Experience in performing the characterization of solid/hazardous wastes.
Experience working with radioactive, hazardous, and biological wastes in an academic setting.
Completion of the 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations (HAZWOPER) training, as well as up-to-date 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher training.

Additional Certifications:

Certification as a Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM), Registered Environmental Manager (REM), or Registered Environmental Professional (REP), or similar certification is preferred.

Physical Demands

The incumbent must pass an annual medical examination to determine ability to perform the job. Required to wear personal protective equipment. Required to be available for emergency response at any time. Able to perform extensive standing, walking, climbing, and lifting. May work in dirty, dusty or uncomfortable surroundings. Required to work with biological, pathogenic, radioactive, and other hazardous materials. Required to obtain special training and/or certification needed to fulfill the duties of the position as appropriate.

Must be capable of lifting equipment and materials up to fifty pounds.
