The Department of Family Science (FMSC) at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications and nominations for the position of Professor and Chair, a 12-month appointment. FMSC was the first Family Science department in an accredited School of Public Health in the nation, and is a recognized leader in Family Health. Its vision is to promote physical, mental and social wellbeing of all families, in order to eliminate the burden of disease and health disparities, and to foster resilience and social justice. The department is seeking an innovative leader who, alongside our Dean, Dr. Boris Lushniak, embraces our creative mission. FMSC’s interdisciplinary programs examine both internal family processes and the dynamic interaction of families with the biological, behavioral, sociocultural, economic, and political aspects of their environment. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science in Family Science, a Master of Science in Couple and Family Therapy (accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education; and ranked as the top Master’s only program in the nation by Online Psychology Degrees), and Ph.D. degrees in Family Science and Maternal and Child Health.

FMSC’s 16 full-time faculty come from diverse backgrounds including family science, human development, maternal and child health, epidemiology, psychology, sociology, economics, history, and law. Faculty are nationally and internationally recognized scholars who hold leadership positions in key professional organizations. FMSC has been named “Outstanding Academic Unit” by the University President’s Commission on Ethnic Minority Issues more frequently than any department in the university. The Department has 400 undergraduate majors and 45 full-time graduate students. FMSC sponsors the Maryland Family Impact Seminar and operates the Center for Healthy Families, a training and research center which annually provides clinical services to 450 families. FMSC faculty are engaged with school/university research centers, such as the Maryland Center for Health Equity, Maryland Population Research Center, Maryland Prevention Research Center, and Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy. The Department is housed in state-of-the-art academic and clinical facilities in the School of Public Health.

UMCP is the flagship campus of the University of Maryland System with over 2,500 faculty, 27,000 undergraduates, and 10,000 graduate students. Minimum Qualifications:

This is an internal search to UMCP campus only. Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in family science, maternal and child health, epidemiology, psychology, sociology, human development, family and population health or a related discipline, and should demonstrate a strong record of funded research and scholarship in an area relevant to the department’s mission. Candidates should be eligible for appointment as a tenured Full Professor. Previous leadership and administrative experience are required. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion; an ability to foster professional and community partnerships; a commitment to faculty, staff, and student; and mentoring and development and excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
