Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Maryland (UMIACS) is an interdisciplinary research organization focused on high performance computing, data intensive computing and visual computing. The UMIACS Technical Staff is responsible for the computing environments for our 14 labs/centers and the research programs of 70 faculty.

Responsibilities are to provide support for sponsored research activities in data intensive computing (DIC) with significant focus on deep learning. Tasks will include, but are not limited to deployment and maintenance of the DIC resources/infrastructure, patching and support of systems and applications, building highly customized software environments and interacting with other technical team members to support unique computing environments.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree or an equivalent combination of education,
    training, and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years hands-on experience in supporting DIC or high performance computing resources.
  • Expertise in enterprise Linux systems administration and configuration management.
  • Highly proficient software building skills in UNIX/Linux.
  • Ability to establish strong working relationships with colleagues,
    faculty and staff.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Preferences:
  • Experience in SLURM, Hadoop/Spark and Condor computing platforms.
  • Expertise with deep learning toolkits such as Caffe, Tensorflow, Torch or similar software toolkits.
  • Integration experience with network-attached storage systems.

Physical Demands

Predominantly operates in an office environment. Dexterity and visual acuity necessary to operate and move computers is essential as is the ability to communicate verbally. Some periods of time may be spent in computer rooms and communications equipment spaces for installation, testing, and troubleshooting. Some work (less than 5%) requires moving and lifting of heavy equipment.
