Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Associate Director reports to the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Director for Letters and Sciences (LTSC) and has primary responsibility for the overall day-to-day operation of LTSC. Serves as LTSC representative at meetings and events in Director’s absence.

Assists in the implementation of academic policies and procedures, and oversees external communications. Provides support to assistant directors and advisors. Works collaboratively to ensure that work is accomplished effectively, and office policies and procedures are applied fairly to undergraduate students. Works to maintain a supportive atmosphere based on inclusivity and civility. Supports the creation and implementation of success strategies that keep pace with new campus policies, priorities, and technologies.

Serves as the primary contact on behalf of LTSC for student and parent concerns. Serves as member on all LTSC office committees. Responsible for the training of new staff. Oversees information technology and facilities management needs for the office, and proposes any changes to the Director. Advises a small caseload of students and teaches an Introduction to the University course. Assists with orientation and recruitment programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Education or related field. At least five years of increasingly responsible experience in academic administration, advising, and supervision. Demonstrated knowledge of student, career and staff development program planning. Possess strong written, verbal, interpersonal and analytical skills. Well-organized, extremely motivated, and has the ability to keep multiple projects and responsibilities current and demonstrates excellent judgement. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a large diverse staff and with representatives from across campus. Ability to quickly learn campus electronic advising tools and proficiency with MS Office Suite.


Knowledge of University of Maryland academic policies, procedures, resources, systems and major requirements. Proficiency using campus UMD advising technology (e.g. Testudo, SIS, u.Achieve and Advise on the Web).
