Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Maryland (UMIACS) is an interdisciplinary research organization focused on high performance computing, data intensive computing, and visual computing. The UMIACS technical staff is responsible for the computing environments for our 14 labs and centers and the research programs of our 70 faculty, including the students and staff who support them.
The main responsibilities for this position include providing support for Windows laptops, desktops, and servers while providing oversight for our help desk. Tasks will include, but are not limited to deployment and maintenance of Windows laptops, desktops and servers; patching and maintenance of these systems and their applications; management and scheduling of our help desk facility; and interacting with other technical team members to support unique computing environments.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelor of Science degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Minimum 4 years hands on experience supporting a large to moderate Windows laptop, desktop and server environment.
- Experience administering Active Directory with GPOs and proficiency in PowerShell.
- Experience working in a Help Desk environment.
- Ability to establish strong working relationships with colleagues, faculty and staff.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.


- Experience in supporting advanced Microsoft Windows services like Exchange, Direct Access, Bitlocker and others.
- Automated systems management proficiency with products like Microsoft SCCM, LANDesk, or similar products.
- Expertise with a backup and restore products for Microsoft laptop, desktop and server environments.

Physical Demands

Predominantly operates in an office environment. Dexterity and visual acuity necessary to operate and move computers is essential as is the ability to communicate verbally. Some periods of time may be spent in computer rooms and communications equipment spaces for installation, testing, and troubleshooting. Some work (less than 5%) requires moving and lifting of heavy equipment.
