Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Under the general supervision of the St. Mary’s County Agricultural Extension Educator and the Area Extension Director for Southern Maryland, the Master Gardener Coordinator performs a variety of duties to carry out educational activities related to gardening and horticulture, including field days, fairs, meetings, field tours, workshops and seminars. Primary responsibilities are to provide support for operations of the St. Mary’s Master Gardener Program. Incumbent may function in a “lead” role with regard to ongoing work, special projects or team-oriented assignments, and in carrying out education, outreach and program marketing plans.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in related field required;
• Five years of progressively responsible related work experience or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities;
• Ability to work with volunteers in a coordinating, oversight or managerial role;
• Working knowledge in horticulture and other general agricultural practices;
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
• Experience working in marketing or public relations is a plus;
• Skill to establish and maintain successful working relationships. Use judgment and initiative in selecting priorities developing effective work methods/tools and determining proper course of action to produce a desired outcome/result;
• Ability to work independently with limited guidance and instruction;
• Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Database and Gmail, etc.;
• Personal transportation and valid driver’s license;
• Flexible working hours and must be available for evening and weekend programs and meetings;
• When offered employment by UME, the successful candidate will be required to obtain a clear background check by the State of Maryland and FBI before beginning work assignment.

Duties include:
• Coordinate, organize and conduct programs for and with the St. Mary’s County Master Gardener Program, including volunteer coordination.
• Organize both basic and advanced training programs for the Master Gardener Program.
• Assist in recruitment, training and support of volunteers; prepare and maintain volunteer and member enrollment and re-enrollment files.
• Help in facilitating applied research in alternative agriculture through data collection and plot evaluation
• Provide support to all UME-St. Mary’s programs in responding to requests for information, including help in writing newsletters and reports, media contacts, information dissemination, UME marketing and distribution of written materials as needed.
• Participate as a team member with other faculty and staff to conduct educational programs that meet the needs of agricultural producers in St. Mary’s County
• Present topics and lead discussion at meetings, workshops and other program activities as needed.
• May perform general office/secretarial tasks such as ordering standard program supplies; collating and assembling documents; photocopying correspondence and reports; attend meeting and take/distribute minutes, perform additional duties as required.
• Participate in professional development opportunities to keep abreast of current research, educational methods, administrative procedures, etc.

Salary: Will be commensurate with experience, with a base salary of $18,287 for this half-time position. The position is a 12-month half-time (50%) contract that may be renewed annually, depending on available funding.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
• Nature of the Position: This position frequently presents information through vocal and written communication to individuals of various ages, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds. The ability to express or exchange ideas vocally is important, as well as the ability to hear and perceive information at normal spoken work levels.
• Physical Demands: A routine part of this position’s responsibilities would be to transport materials to and from teaching/event locations, including loading and unloading the vehicle. The employee will frequently lift and/or move items weighing up to 20 pounds. Set-up and tear-down of displays, tables, and chairs would be necessary at many teaching sites.
• Environmental conditions vary; primarily in office, but also exposed to gardens, farms and other outdoor conditions.
