Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Assistant Director, Corporate and External Relations, is responsible for conducting and managing development activities to support cybersecurity programs and corporate fundraising efforts for other areas at the University of Maryland. These include managing the Corporate Partners Program for ACES and MC2, as well as providing fundraising assistance to university-wide cybersecurity efforts, such as the Maryland Global Initiative in Cybersecurity (MaGIC). S/he will strengthen relationships with current and prospective funders, solicit gifts, provide benefits to funders, ensure proper recognition and oversee events with help from the ACES Coordinator. The Assistant Director will create strategies to maximize engagement by Corporate Partners with ACES and MC2. S/he will be responsible for cultivating new prospects for philanthropic gifts and research grants; interacting with the MC2 External Advisory Board; public outreach efforts; collaboration with senior administrators and various internal audiences, including communications staff; and communication with senior industry, academic, and government representatives as needed.

The Assistant Director will work collaboratively with and support the Director of the Maryland Cybersecurity Center (MC2), the Director of the Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students (ACES), and the Director of the Maryland Global Initiative in Cybersecurity (MaGIC). In addition, the Associate Director will provide corporate fundraising support to other areas of the University as assigned.

This position requires the ability to travel locally 25% of the time and to attend evening and weekend events and programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor degree.

Three to five years of successful fundraising and stewardship of corporate donors and sponsors.
Experience working with high-level corporate representatives; building donor/customer and prospect relationships and developing stewardship activities.
Experience securing grants and soliciting and closing gifts of six figures or more.
Experience writing proposals, grants and/or sponsorship materials.
Experience overseeing successful stewardship events and activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Able to synthesize complex material and have a great attention to detail.
Able to manage many projects simultaneously and a demonstrated record of completing assignments.
Able to independently manage competing priorities in a complex and dynamic environment.
Strong customer service ethic.

Ability to speak on behalf of corporations and liaise across campus regarding topics including recruiting, sponsored research, executive or employee training, intellectual property and “tech transfer”, and all manner of philanthropic donations.

Able to demonstrate the aptitude to represent the University in a highly professional and effective manner.


Experience in a complex research institution/academic environment.
Understanding of, and commitment to, the values and role of a public, research university.
Experience in higher education and/or industry.
Experience working with senior executives, volunteers, senior administration and faculty.
Exposure to and interaction with the cybersecurity industry.
