Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

University of Maryland Extension is seeking to hire a full-time agriculture position on a 12-month contractual basis with benefits that can be renewed annually depending on funding availability. The Agent Associate will work with the Agriculture Program Leader, Area Extension Director, and other faculty and staff in Worcester County and the Lower Shore cluster to develop a viable plan of agricultural education programming for farmers and residents in Worcester County. Daily supervision of this position will be by the Area Extension Director with additional programmatic reporting to the state UME Agriculture Program Leader.

Responsibilities:
• Organizing, facilitating, teaching, conducting and evaluating educational programs in Agriculture and Natural Resources; to include crop production, farm management, integrated pest management, pesticide safety and handling, and natural resource conservation.
• Coordinate efforts to improve financial viability of small farms through sustainable agriculture initiatives, and continuing education for farm producers.
• Develop, implement and evaluate rural economic initiatives including but not limited to agri-tourism, wholesale markets, direct marketing, value added projects and alternative income opportunities.
• Serve as the UME educator and program lead for Worcester County.
• Develop programs in the areas of Integrated Pest Management, Alternative Agriculture and Environmental Concerns.
• Work with citizen advisory groups to identify educational needs and priorities.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree;
• Become certified Maryland nutrient management advisor/consultant and obtain the commercial pesticide applicators license in category X-public agency;
• Demonstrated leadership and management abilities with evidence of being able to work well with farm producers and community leaders and must have strong communication skills;
• Knowledge and use of computer technology for educational programming and management is required;
• Personal transportation and valid driver’s license;
• Flexible working hours and must be available for evening and weekend programs and meetings;
• If offered employment by UME, individual will be required before beginning job assignment, to obtain a background check by the State of Maryland and FBI.

Preferences:

• Major area of study in fields such as Agriculture Education, Applied Plant Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field.
• Preference will be given to individuals who currently are licensed to write MD nutrient management plans and/or hold a pesticide applicators license.
• Experience with pasture, livestock, and/or small flock production.
• Ability and willingness to work with volunteers.
• Demonstrated achievement in developing, implementing and evaluating community education programs

Salary & Benefits: Salary will be a base of $36,575 per year. The University of Maryland offers an extensive benefits package.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
• Nature of the Position: This position frequently presents information through vocal and written communication to individuals of various ages, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds. The ability to express or exchange ideas vocally is important, as well as the ability to hear and perceive information at normal spoken work levels.
• Physical Demands: A routine part of this position’s responsibilities would be to transport materials to and from teaching/event locations, including loading and unloading the vehicle. The employee will frequently lift and/or move items weighing up to 20 pounds. Set-up and tear-down of displays, tables, and chairs would be necessary at many teaching sites.
• Environmental: Team driven, office environment of professional character, competence, and collaboration. Deadline driven in terms of program planning and reporting. This position requires the employee to work outdoors at certain times of the year, especially during the time of annual fair, 4-H residential or day camps and youth recreation activities. This may occur during very hot and/or inclement weather.
• Visual Acuity: Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data and presentations.
