Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Intersector Initiative (TII) is a collaboration between the University of Maryland School of Public Policy (SPP) and The Intersector Project (TIP). Situated within a leading public research university in the Washington, D.C. region, SPP has extensive linkages into local, national, and international policy-making processes. Since its founding, promoting collaboration among the public, for-profit and not-for-profit sectors has been TIP’s central mission, and it has become a recognized hub for resources and commentary relevant to the topic.
The purpose of TII is to promote awareness and understanding of the means by which the public and private sectors, including the non-profit sector, can collaborate to address important public policy and management issues. To promote awareness and understanding, TII will execute projects using Intersector methodology, conduct research and engage on cross-cutting issues, communicate the value of the Intersector approach, and educate the next generation of Intersector actors.
SPP seeks a director to lead this initiative, reporting to the dean of the School of Public Policy. A nationwide search will be undertaken.

Primary duties to include:

● Establish the Intersector Initiative at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, including the administrative capabilities and procedures necessary to carry out the activities of the Initiative.
● Develop and manage a competitive process for identifying Intersector projects to be funded, working closely with School of Public Policy faculty and staff to establish a robust research agenda that aligns with the strategic priorities of the Initiative and the School.
● Conduct evaluations of all project proposals, and develop written analyses of projects presented to the Intersector Board sufficient to enable the Board to make funding decisions.
● Manage the diverse portfolio of Intersector projects funded; including monitoring the projects during execution to ensure work is carried out consistent with objectives, budgets, and within stated time frames; and conducting program evaluations of each project after completion to assess achievement of stated objectives.
● Convene meetings of top national and state policy makers, business and civil society leaders to catalyze adoption of policies consistent with the conclusions of Intersector projects and the outcomes of the Intersector research agenda.
● Facilitate development of Intersector cases and course materials, and promote their integration into classroom learning within the School of Public Policy and elsewhere at the University of Maryland.
● Lead efforts to further increase the profile and application of Intersector methodology to pressing societal challenges, through convenings, events and strategic communications.
● Support the efforts of the Initiative Board, including staffing periodic meetings of the Board and serving at the key point of contact in the School for Board members.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree and ten years of management related experience


Extensive experience in collaborating across business, government and non-profit sectors;
Proven track record of program development and strategic management;
Ability to lead teams of faculty and staff to support the objectives of TII;
Experience in fundraising and engaging external support including thorough understanding of the changing fundraising landscape and capacity to develop innovative partnerships with other organizations;
Demonstrated capacity to represent the Intersector Initiative at public events and to speak about the topic, where appropriate.

The Maryland School of Public Policy is a top-ranked school of public policy and management with a faculty of scholars and distinguished practitioners. The school offers a signature MPP degree with robust specializations in fields such as energy and climate policy, management and leadership, international security and economic policy, and social policy (primarily for pre-career students), as well as a Masters of Public Management degree (primarily for mid-career students). The PhD program was recently rated amongst the top ten nationally by the National Research Council. The has admitted its first undergraduate majors public policy beginning Fall 2017, and hosts two undergraduate minors and living learning programs. It also offers a number of executive (degree and non-degree) programs for career executives in federal, state, and international agencies.
