The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) is a regional higher education center of the University System of Maryland (USM) located in Rockville, Maryland. USG is an innovative partnership of 9 public universities providing access to more than 80 high-demand undergraduate and graduate degrees specifically selected to respond to the workforce needs of the county and region. USG currently serves over 3900 students enrolled day-time, evening, full-time and part-time degree programs. The campus is projected to grow to 7500 students and is planning additional facilities to expand its health sciences and engineering degree offerings.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The position provides support for career readiness activities at USG. Support includes, but not limited to, direct service to students, career guidance and consultation, coordination of student experiential learning activities, coordination and presentation of workshops and group career development activities, event planning, outreach to USG’s academic partners, and development of programs and services tailored to individual student cohorts at USG. This position will also provide some critical support for Career Center employer engagement.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of some administrative work experience required.
Preferences:
  • Knowledge of USG campus and its student community.
  • Experience with event planning and/or student programming.
  • Experience with career coaching and/or student consultation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The ideal candidate should possess some knowledge and experience in the areas of higher education, project management, student consultation and event planning. Candidate should have an understanding of the USG educational partnership and the unique student population we serve.
The employee should demonstrate the ability to work well both individually and within a group, and the ability to successfully collaborate with USG’s partner institutions, partner Career Centers, and academic program representatives. The employee should possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail. The ideal candidate should also possess strong oral and written communication skills, as well as exceptional customer service skills.

The position is assigned to the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) Career & Internship Services Center located in Rockville, Maryland.

Hours of work are flexible but will generally include standard office hours of 9am-5pm. One weekday afternoon-evening shift of 12-8pm required. This position is a contractual six month appointment with no benefits. The starting hourly rate is $20/hr/

Physical Demands

Professional, office working environment. Light lifting, event set up, and the ability to transport and set up of materials to and from various events (outreach events, employer events, job fairs., etc…) both on and off-campus required. Some regional travel to partner institutions, various employer sites, workforce and community events, career related events, and training activities required.
