Founded in 1856, University of Maryland, College Park is the flagship institution in the University System of Maryland. Our 1,250-acre College Park campus is just minutes away from Washington, D.C., and the nexus of the nation’s legislative, executive, and judicial centers of power. This unique proximity to business and technology leaders, federal departments and agencies, and a myriad of research entities, embassies, think tanks, cultural centers, and non-profit organizations is simply unparalleled. Synergistic opportunities for our faculty and students abound and are virtually limitless in the nation’s capital and surrounding areas. The University is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding and diverse faculty and staff that will enhance our stature of preeminence in our three missions of teaching, scholarship, and full engagement in our community, the state of Maryland, and in the world.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Responsible for the portfolio of web applications used by IBBR for administrative and research purposes. This position reports to IBBR’s Director of IT and will work with him and other IT staff in developing IBBR’s technology strategy. IBBR supports ~30 applications which are currently mostly built on Drupal and serve as IBBR’s in house ERP. A major first project will be the decision to move these applications forward to either Drupal 8 or a new technology stack. IBBR’s existing portfolio has served us well and is built largely on Drupal 6 and then Drupal 7 but we are feeling the growing pains of building on top of Drupal and are ready to find a new way forward either by a redesign of our architecture in Drupal 8 or by moving to a different framework entirely. While we need to preserve data from the existing site, you will have an open canvas upon which to design the next iteration of the IBBR web portfolio. This is an excellent opportunity to get to set your own vision and bring it to life. You will have considerable independence in building the direction of IBBR’s web applications while still being able to draw upon support from IBBR’s IT team where you need it. We’re looking for someone who will develop a plan they can be passionate about and help inspire us to join you. We want to build web applications that will streamline workflows and make life better for our faculty and staff and we want to be a model to other campus departments in developing great web tools.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science plus 2-3 years experience OR equivalent combination of relevant work experience. Demonstrated experience with at least one modern web development framework (e.g. .NET, Rails, Laravel, Django, etc). Some experience with a modern front end JS framework (e.g. React, Angular, Vue, etc). Experience with HTML/CSS. Ability to work with customers, gather requirements, plan workloads, manage time, and gather feedback for improvement. Ability to translate technical concepts into language for non-technical people and likewise to listen and ask questions in order to find the best solutions to the problems people bring us.

Preferences:

Experience with Drupal 7 strongly preferred. Talent and/or experience with user interface design and graphic arts.
