Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The IT Graduate Assistant will be a member of the Educational Technology Services (ETS) desktop support team. The initial appointment will be for 12 months, requires a
weekly commitment of 20 hours, comes with the possibility of annual renewal, and will begin as soon as possible. The incumbent will serve as supplemental support to
the desktop technician. Duties include:
• Assist the desktop support technician with 2nd tier support issues
• Troubleshoot hardware and software problems for end-users (diagnose, resolve, and follow-up, as appropriate)
• Assist with computer, printer and network configuration
• Install and update operating systems, security updates, software applications, and utilities
• Perform patch management and ongoing maintenance for computers
• Provide end-user hardware setup
• Accurately record, update, and document various requests using a ticketing service system
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park. Must possess familiarity with modern desktop and laptop computer systems and
peripherals. Required to be able to lift up to 30 lbs and ability to carry out standard desktop technician duties (e.g. computer set-up and disassembly, cable management,
installing computer hardware components).


The candidate should possess the following skills:
• Prior experience with desktop support and maintenance is strongly preferred
• Experience working with both Mac and Windows platforms as well as various software packages including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite is strongly
• Familiarity with Microsoft’s Active Directory environment is desirable
• Experience working in an academic environment, supporting faculty and staff is a plus
• Expert problem solving skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to work in a team and with a diverse community of students, faculty and staff in a professional manner
• Good time management and interpersonal skills
• Customer-friendly attitude
