UMCES is a research institution comprised of four laboratories and the Maryland Sea Grant College, which are located in different regions throughout the State. More about UMCES can be found at Maryland Sea Grant (, located in College Park, Maryland, is a federal-state partnership that supports scientific research, education, and outreach. We play a vital outreach role at the interface of a diverse array of people interested in the coastal environment, including researchers, policy makers, resource managers, educators, students, and the general public.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The IT Coordinator will implement, administer, and strengthen Maryland Sea Grant’s (MDSG) use of existing and new information technology to improve administration, education, outreach, and staff efficiency. S/he will provide leadership in the use and development of software, online applications, and other technologies to enhance Maryland Sea Grant’s mission and online presence (e.g., education modules, program administration systems, Drupal-based website). The coordinator will be encouraged to network with other IT professionals in university departments and institutions to effectively use available resources and develop new approaches as well as be offered professional development opportunities to advance programming and other IT skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree AND 2 years of experience in an IT position.


An accredited degree in computer science, information systems, computer engineering, or related field or an advanced science degree with significant evidence of computer and web technology development is preferred. Experience working in an academic or non-profit institution is preferred.
Strong candidates will have working knowledge of computer operating systems, software, and programming and web development technologies (e.g., PHP, mySQL, Javascript, PERL, CSS, Apache server software, HTML/HTML5, CSS/CSS3, and JavaScript/ jQuery). Working knowledge of back-end management and development of Drupal-based websites is preferred.
