Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland Office of International Affairs seeks an innovative and strategic leader to serve as Director of Education Abroad. The University offers proprietary, exchange, faculty-led and affiliated programs, and students can chose from over 200 programs in 72 countries. Education Abroad’s focus is to fully integrate study abroad into the curriculum, provide excellent customer service and expand the diversity and inclusivity of its programs. Programs are intentionally created to equip students with the knowledge, skills and experiences to prepare them as global professionals and citizens.

Education Abroad is part of a broader international education strategy, under the direction of the Office of International Affairs. The Director directly reports to the University’s Senior International Officer, the Associate Vice President (AVP) for International Affairs (OIA) and is a member of OIA’s Senior Leadership Team. The Director will advance OIA’s internationalization goals by developing and implementing strategic initiatives in order to meet its annual goals.

The successful candidate will provide leadership in the following areas:
● Strategic Planning. Develop annual strategic planning using SMART goals, specifically focused on increased participation, curriculum integration, enhancement of services, and expansion of diversity and inclusion.

● Diversity and Inclusion. Identify underlying issues, set ambitious goals, and implement innovative approaches with demonstrated results that expand access to study abroad experiences.

● Curriculum Integration. Collaborate with academic units to integrate study abroad programs and courses into their curriculum through innovative programming, strategic partnerships with international institutions, and articulation of learning outcomes. Manage cross-campus collaboration with faculty, academic units, and administrative offices.

● Portfolio Management. Advise and assist faculty and departments with program development focusing on curriculum integration, academic standards, approval, implementation and assessment.

● Budget and Finances. Oversee office finances to ensure proper resource allocation. Review and approve all programs for fiscal feasibility to ensure strategic goals are aligned with growth of fund balance from year to year. Analyze surplus/deficit programs to realign EA’s self-supporting program portfolio.

● Funding and Donor Relations. Write and submit grant proposals, collaborate with UMD’s development office to pursue strategic donor relationships, and grow EA’s scholarship fund.

● Procedures and Processes. Evaluate and improve procedures and processes to ensure EA is using effective practices in order to enhance services across campus.

● Policy Management. Evaluate policies and update on a continual basis. Ensure policies are student-centered and balanced to meet self-support needs.

● Contract Management. Develop, review and vet contracts MOUs, articulation agreements and collaborative proposals between UMD and internal and external entities.

● Compliance & Liability. Ensure compliance with overseas, national, regional, state and local regulations for all programs in order to limit UMD liability.

● Risk Management. Work with Director of International Risk Management for any program-related issues which require institutional support on all levels.

● Intra and Inter Institutional Collaboration. Collaborate with other offices to increase visibility of study abroad, promote international educational exchange, and serve as a member of and liaison to other education abroad organizations (NAFSA, Forum, Big 10, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in International Education or Business, or other related field. Seven years of international higher education experience. Five years serving in a leadership position with budget and fiscal responsibility. Five years supervisory experience. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to create strong working relationships with colleagues across campus, including, faculty, staff, students and parents. Effective critical thinking, oral and written presentation skills. Ability to work independently while managing a dynamic team.

Preferences:

Experience with program and curriculum development and assessment; experience living and/or working abroad; strong background in intercultural dynamics and relationships in a global setting; ability to speak and write in a foreign language; and familiarity with software systems used in higher education and international education.

Additional Certifications:

This position requires limited international travel. A valid passport is required.

Physical Demands

Traditional office environment. Must be able to travel. Occasional work on evenings and weekends may be required.
