Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Program Director will work within the Judge Alexander Williams, Jr. Center for Education, Justice and Ethics. This center is part of the African American Studies Department within the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. This individual will develop and implement programs consistent with the mission and objectives of the Judge AW Center. The incumbent reports directly to the Executive Director.

This position is necessary in order to take the Center to the next stage of growth. An individual is needed to create and manage Center programs in order to fulfill our outreach goals, as well as identify funding opportunities, manage the resulting contract work and oversee office staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A Bachelor’s Degree is required as a minimum, but Master’s degree highly preferred.
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Five or more years of experience in a non-profit organization or institution of higher education, preferably with management responsibilities
• Ability to develop and manage effective center-sponsored programs related to education, justice and ethics.
• Experience with grant proposal writing
• Supervisory experience
• Budget development and management experience

Preferences:

• Master’s Degree or equivalent
• Education and/or background in either public policy, criminology, criminal justice, education or social reform
• Familiarity with local and state political structures and political sensitivities
• Knowledge of UMD structures, assets, policies and procedures
• Track record of developed and operationalized strategies that have taken a non-profit organization to the next stage of growth
• Experience within a higher education, soft funded center
• Organized and attentive to detail
• Possesses the ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people

Physical Demands

Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
Light travel within campus and around the Metropolitan D.C/Baltimore area.
