Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Graduate Assistant in Undergraduate Studies provides administrative support to the undergraduate office and general academic advising to undergraduate Mechanical Engineering students. Academic advising is mandatory for students majoring in engineering. Advising undergraduate students in this department involves helping with course selection, recommending resources for students who are struggling academically, helping students make a 4 year plan, and helping students incorporate special programs into their plan. For example, study abroad, co-op, minor fields of study, double majors, and the BS/MS program are all popular opportunities open to our students. Additional tasks include working with student organizations, host prospective students as well as handling administrative tasks that are the responsibility of the undergraduate office. The department is in the process of preparing for an accreditation review. The GA will assist with gathering and compiling data and creating reports and other materials.

Minimum Qualifications:

Admission as a full-time graduate student at the University of Maryland. The position requires attention to detail, excellent interpersonal skills and strong writing skills. The successful candidate will possess energy, enthusiasm, and a positive approach to work.
An ability to work independently and as a part of a team is desired.
Computer skills, database and word process, are required.

Preferences:

Students pursuing a Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Counseling and Personnel or other graduate degree in the field of Education is preferred
Graphic arts skills are a plus (experience creating attractive flyers, posters, brochures, etc.).
