Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The graduate research assistant will perform duties in support of research on quantifying and predicting cyber security behaviors of users on a network. This provides an excellent means to use research methods and project techniques to apply theoretical knowledge in situations, which will benefit the university and provide experience for the student. The student will also expand his or her knowledge and expertise by association with research-oriented responsibilities.
The goal of this research is to improve the overall security of an organization by understanding how historical behaviors of users can be used to predict their future behaviors. We will work with various forms of data, such as netflow, social media networks, and survey responses, in order to quantify the reputation of users and their devices. We will also design and implement various experiments on the user population at the University of Maryland. • Assist in conducting research on quantifying the reputation of users based on their network behaviors, social media behaviors, and various individual traits.
• Assist in data collection, cleaning, and processing.
• Conduct exploratory data analysis.
• Run various analytics on the data and prepare results in narrative and graphical forms.
• Assist in developing synthetic data sets if real data is lacking or unavailable.
• Prepare, administer, and analyze survey questions and prepare results in narrative and graphical forms.
• Develop and conduct controlled experiments to help understand user behaviors.
• Prepare literature reviews relevant to the research topic.
• Assist with the editing and preparation of manuscripts.
• Meet regularly with supervisor and research team to discuss research assignments.
• Perform research work in archives, through interviews, online, or whatever may be appropriate to assist the assistant’s supervisor.
• Utilize technology available and required to fulfill duties.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be enrolled in a MS or PhD program at the University of Maryland.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail required.
• Proficient at academic research activities.
• Capable of respectful interaction with peers, students, and university staff from different disciplines and departments.
• Proficiency in Python, R, or some other statistical programming language.
• Experience with data cleaning and processing.
• Experience with database design and management.
• Exhibits effective and efficient work habits individually and in team environments.
• Exposure to social science research preferred.
• Experience with and training on human subjects research preferred
