Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

An hourly Faculty Assistant position (40hrs/week) is available at the University of Maryland Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research, Insect Transformation Facility, in Rockville, MD, to assist with the care and maintenance of laboratory mice colonies. Duties will include ensuring appropriate care and feeding of mice, cleaning and changing cages, cleaning and upkeep of animal facility, animal facility documentation and communication, maintaining proper temperature, light, and humidity levels, performing routine research related activities such as collecting, measuring and analyzing specimens, transporting and weighing animals, assisting with experimental procedures, coordinating animal care activities with other staff and the University Veterinarian. Other duties may include insect rearing and general laboratory duties.

The University of Maryland Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research at Shady Grove conducts research and provides interdisciplinary training in molecular genetics of plant, animal and microbial systems, biomolecular structure and function, biomolecular systems and biometrology, and develops new technologies for measurement, analysis, and design.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in related field. Applicants should be comfortable working with and handling small animals.


Prior experience is preferred but not necessary.

Physical Demands

Incumbent will be working in the Insect Transformation Facility to assist with the care and maintenance of laboratory mice colonies. Applicants should be comfortable working with and handling small animals.
