Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Provost, the Dean will lead the College’s 342 faculty members in the realization of an identity, vision, and strategy to drive the College to the next stage of development. The College provides broad and robust opportunities to students across nine departments that span the mathematical, computer, and natural sciences. The Dean will champion CMNS across the campus and beyond, engaging stakeholders within the UMD community, throughout surrounding counties, the state of Maryland, and Washington, D.C., as well as nationally and globally. S/he will champion the accomplishments of the College and its broad impact on the scholarly output of this public, land-grant institution. As the chief academic and administrative officer of the College, the Dean is responsible for the educational experiences of the 5,969 undergraduate and 1,286 graduate students and will oversee many research and academic activities including top ranked programs in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Geosciences, and others. The College has a $90 million operating budget and research expenditures of approximately $150 million annually.

Minimum Qualifications:

The Dean of the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences will be a leader with a national and international vision, a collegial and consultative leadership style, and the energy and integrity to inspire the College to achieve new levels of excellence. Candidates should have a history of scholarly excellence, administrative leadership in a large and highly-complex enterprise, the ability to build and cultivate consensus within the College and beyond, and accomplishment in creating and supporting a climate of community, inclusivity, and respect. While no single candidate will have all the ideal qualifications, the committee seeks candidates with the following qualifications and abilities:
• A terminal degree in a represented field and the scholarly achievement to attain the rank of full professor in a CMNS department;
• An intellectual leader; a distinguished teacher, scholar, and academic visionary who brings a passion for students, research, and service;
• An experienced administrator with a track record of success in a large, complex unit, college, or similar environment; an astute understanding of finances and the relationship between academic priorities and budget;
• An open and consultative leader; an excellent collaborator who can partner with and motivate faculty, staff, and students to take the College to a greater level of success;
• Broad-minded, with experience and interest beyond the sciences to tie the College to the University as regards both scholarship and citizenship;
• A technologically-adept communicator who can inspire and cultivate key external constituencies, attract partners, raise funds, generate enthusiasm, and obtain substantial commitments to further support CMNS;
• A demonstrated commitment to diversity at all levels, and a deeply-held belief in its power to transform education, scholarship, and service for the betterment of the College, the University, the state, and the Nation;
• Integrity, honesty, and enthusiasm, and a sense of humor;
• An interest in being a visible member of University life and connected to civic life in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area, the state of Maryland, and on the national and international stage

Physical Demands
