Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Executive Director of Development (ED) will assist the Assistant Dean with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Robert H. Smith School of Business’ Development office. The Executive Director will work closely with the Assistant Dean, the Dean, key faculty, and volunteers to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts at the $100,000 level and above. In addition to working with individual prospects, the ED will supervise the front-line fundraising team and manage the prospect pool for the entire team. The Executive Director will monitor and report on fundraising trends in business schools including Big 10 and nationally ranked b-schools. Additionally, the ED will serve as a key resource during the campaign by assisting in the management of volunteers and the solicitation of campaign prospects.

The Executive Director must be a highly energetic professional with a proven track record of building relationships and closing gifts above $100,000. Must have managed a fundraising staff and have the ability to work collaboratively and strategically with other fundraising professionals and campus leaders. Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, as the majority of the position involves sharing the vision of the Business School with alumni and other supporters. S/he should have knowledge of and enthusiasm for the University of Maryland and business schools.

The Director will work under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Development and supervise a staff of four including front line major gift officers.

This position requires travel 50% of the time with availability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor’s degree.

A minimum of ten years (10) of experience in the field of development and fundraising or marketing/sales with a minimum of five years (5) in development experience at a major gifts level soliciting and closing six figure gifts. Must have strong leadership ability and have experience managing a staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must have a solid knowledge of fundraising practices and principals; be a skilled relationship builder; have the ability to use fundraising software. Must have the ability to juggle multiple priorities and work independently, while also maneuvering as a prominent and enthusiastic member of the college’s development team is essential. Must have strong communication skills including solid writing and listening skills.
