Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Maryland Institute of Applied Environmental Health of the SPH was recently awarded a Cooperative Agreement with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) (http://www.darpa.mil/about-us/about-darpa) of the US Department of Defense to persons who are contagious (not merely infected) and identify early biomarkers of contagiousness in persons with viral respiratory infections such as human influenza. The project, which examines the process of transmission of acute respiratory infections on approximately 350 freshmen enrolled in the College Park Scholars (CPS) program over the 17-18 academic year, is supported by a large number of undergraduate research assistants. The Coordinator will play a key role in supporting the PI in developing curricula for and organizing the undergraduate research assistant teams. The coordinator will report to the PI of the Prometheus@UMD project but also be responsible for coordination directly with the senior management of UMD College Park Scholars, including managing direct communications with them and responding directly to their guidance and recommendations on academic and student affairs matters related to CPS academic programming.

Duties:

1. Coordinate the administrative portions of undergraduate academic requirements (practica, capstones, internships) and facilitate connections between undergraduates and Prometheus@UMD faculty mentors.

2. Administer the undergraduate research assistant training course (MIEH 309) and lead occasional discussions.

3. Supervise, and assist scheduling and tasking for the undergraduate research assistants, in coordination with the laboratory staff heads, the clinic staff head, and the marketing/recruiting staff leader.

4. Act as liaison to College Park Scholars administrators and program directors.

5. Act as liaison to Department of Residential Life, Department of Residential Facilities, and other undergraduate administrative entities interacting with the Prometheus@UMD.

6. Plan and execute undergraduate recruiting and teambuilding events.

This is a 1 year contract position with a possibility of renewal based on available funding.

Minimum Qualifications:

The coordinator will hold a minimum of a Master’s degree from a recognized university and have experience in either 1) post-baccalaureate biomedical sciences research combined with large-team leadership experience in professional education and training or college/university-level teaching or academic coordination or 2) large-team leadership experience in professional education and training at college/university-level teaching or academic coordination combined with post-baccalaureate research experience in biomedical sciences.

Physical Demands

Office Environment. Must have visual acuity and be able to read computer monitors; able to hear and talk to communicate; able to sit at a desk for extended periods; frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs, and able to operate manual and automated office equipment.
