Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Graduate Assistant position in the Office of English Graduate Studies provides general administrative support to the Graduate Coordinator and the Directors of both English and CMLT programs. As the primary point of contact for students and faculty, the Graduate Assistant uses professional judgment to respond to internal and external inquiries in all forms (in person, e­mail, telephone, and other correspondence). She/he works intensively with our student record database (Filemaker Pro) and should be prepared to update and maintain it. The Graduate Assistant position assists with confidential and sensitive student record activities, record maintenance, including filing and digital archiving of current and former student files, answering the phone, and making copies. She/he updates the Graduate Studies sections of the website and performs other duties as assigned. The position also involves coordination of admissions to the English Literature and Comparative Literature graduate programs. Applicants must not be enrolled in graduate programs in English, Comparative Literature, or Creative Writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be currently enrolled full­-time in a UMCP graduate program. Preference will be given to students with at least one full year remaining in their graduate studies. Applicants must not be enrolled in graduate programs in English, Comparative Literature, or Creative Writing.


● Demonstrated proficiency in Filemaker Pro
● Demonstrated proficiency with other database, spreadsheet, and word processing software applications, particularly with Google and Microsoft Suite applications
● Experience with using a Content Management System to update websites
● Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to compose effective, appropriately-focused correspondence, including e­mail messages.
● Demonstrated ability to manage multiple activities and deadlines successfully and independently.
