Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Graduate Assistant Software Developer provides broad programming support to the University of Maryland Libraries for the development and delivery of websites, online exhibits and digital collections. The majority of this work will be on the Hippo CMS (https://www.onehippo.org/) website development toolkit which is built utilizing Java, Maven, Spring, and Freemarker templates.

The developer will report to the SSDR manager and work closely with a team of full-time and graduate assistant developers in a structured software development and promotion environment. The developer will participate in daily standup meetings, track assignments and progress using JIRA, track code changes using Git, and generate written documentation using Markdown and Confluence wiki.

DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES
• 80% – Provide web interface development support for websites, online exhibits and digital collections, using Hippo CMS website development toolkit and content management system.
• 10% – Provide strong written documentation throughout the software development lifecycle, utilizing tools such as JIRA for issue tracking, Git for version control, and Confluence Wiki for knowledge sharing and documentation.

• 10% – Other administrative and software development duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree.
• Enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Maryland
• Ability to develop applications using the Java programming language
• One year of programming experience using the Java language
• Experience creating web applications using a Web Application Framework
• Experience using version control software such as Git
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferences:

• Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to information sciences, computer sciences and engineering, or information management.
• Experience using the Ruby on Rails web application framework
• Experience using Eclipse integrated development environment
• Experience using database connectivity tools such as JDBC or ORM
• Experience with automated testing tools, such as JUnit or Selenium
• Experience with REST web services and related tools
• Experience using Solr/Lucene search tools
