Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Senior Director of Development is responsible for developing strategies and leading fundraising activities for university-wide initiatives resulting out of the Fearless Ideas: The Campaign for Maryland, and eventually beyond the close of the campaign. Initially, the Senior Director is expected to assist with the design and execution of fundraising campaigns for special Campaign projects which have a University-wide focus, including The Flagship Promise (undergraduate need-based scholarship program) and any fundraising initiatives arising from the partnership with The Phillips Collection. He/she will coordinate with campus schools/colleges, the Regional team and central units. The Senior Director will also be expected to manage a portfolio for such projects and to successfully cultivate and secure six and seven figure gifts.

This position requires the ability to manage complex projects and duties including working with all campus and central units to coordinate the creation and management of prospect pools, prospect/donor strategies and solicitations. This individual will also help develop case materials, provide strategic analysis and reports on progress, and conduct presentations on the initiatives to boards, staff and others.

He/she will be a liaison to campus leaders – often times including Deans and the unit development staff. The Senior Director reports to the Assistant Vice President for University Development and works closely with the Senior Executive Director of Principal Gifts. This individual may also work closely with campaign volunteer leadership.

May require periodic evening and weekend work. Travel is necessary approximately 40% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required.

A minimum of seven years of experience working in development, preferably in a research university environment.
A minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a front-line major gift officer with a strong track record of closing six- and seven-figure gifts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A proven record of effectiveness in major gift fundraising of six and seven figure gifts.
Proven success starting and managing innovative programs, projects or initiatives.
Proven ability to work with volunteers and/or major donors.
Demonstrated ability to manage, execute, and work collaboratively to complete complex tasks and to oversee large projects.
Excellent writing and interpersonal skills are essential to this position.


Master’s degree preferred.
University campaign experience preferred.
