Would you like to join a growing software development team leading the field of big data analytics in the transportation sector?
The Center for Advanced Transportation Technology Laboratory (CATT Lab) within the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Maryland is the premier transportation information analysis, visualization, and user interface design laboratory in the country. Our products and services are used by thousands of public officials, consultants, and public safety agencies. We produce an integrated suite of tools providing situational awareness for emergency managers and data analytics for decision makers.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Reports to the IT technical lead. This is a highly technical position responsible for design, development, implementation, and optimization of physical and virtual infrastructure consisting of four large data centers (300+ servers) and two development labs (100+ workstations). This position requires strong knowledge and experience with Linux system administration, as well as virtual infrastructure management.

Primary Job Responsibilities:
• Perform day-to-day maintenance and operation of Linux servers and network infrastructure.
• Execute hardware move to our new state-of-the-art data centers.
• Procure hardware and systems to satisfy needs of the CATT Lab products, services, and development staff.
• Support software developers in deploying and maintaining applications with minimal downtime.
• Create and maintain documentation related to system design and configuration.
• Participate in on-call rotation for 24/7 system support.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or equivalent work experience.
• Strong knowledge and experience with Linux (CentOS, RHEL) server administration.
• Minimum 1 year experience in a 24×7 production environment.
• Experience with hypervisors including VMware ESX and ESXi, and OpenVZ.
• Strong debugging and systems analysis skills to be able to identify, and resolve or mitigate issues, quickly.
• Experience in hardware installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and procurement.
• Knowledge and experience with shell scripting such as Bash or other scripting languages such as Python


• Experience with Hadoop strongly preferred.
• Experience with Active Directory administration.
• Experience with RPM building and management.
• Experience with Puppet, Chef, or Ansible.
• Familiarity with network and security concepts.

Additional Certifications:

Server and/or network certifications are a plus.
