|Position Summary/Purpose of Position:||
The CATT Lab is looking for a highly motivated, talented Data Scientist that will help us discover the information hidden in vast amounts of data, and help us make smarter decisions to deliver even better products that solve real-world problems. Your primary focus will be in applying data mining techniques, doing statistical analysis, and building high quality data visualization tools and prediction systems integrated with our current and new products.
The CATT Lab is looking for an exceptional data scientist to leverage our massive dataset of real-time cell-phone tracking, speeds, collisions, weather, transit AVL, video data, audio data, first responder computer aided dispatch information, and much more to enhance our users’ abilities to make fast, informed, actionable decisions.
This is a unique opportunity to join a relatively small, multidisciplinary team of creative and passionate individuals destined to change transportation and big-data analytics in general. We are focused on highimpact projects utilizing big data analytics and machine learning to improve the safety and efficiency of transportation around the world (plus other big problems in other industries).
We’re a team combining computer science and engineering to identify and inject high value insights into planning and operations processes at their point of highest impact. The team works in two-week sprints with multiple design iteration. We enable our developers to use whatever tools, techniques, and algorithms best suited for solving the task at hand.
As our data scientist, you will advocate, evangelize and build data-fueled products—especially web-based visual analytics—that help our customers improve their daily operations. You’ll dig in and become an expert on our massive datasets, and help identify other datasets that might add value. You will provide insight into leading analytic practices, design and lead iterative learning and development cycles, and ultimately produce new and creative analytic solutions that will become part of our core deliverables.
You will work with cross-functional team members to identify and prioritize actionable, high-impact insights. You will lead applied analytics initiatives. You will research, design, implement and validate cutting-edge algorithms to analyze diverse sources of data to achieve targeted outcomes.
As our data scientist, you will provide expertise on mathematical concepts and algorithms for the broader applied analytics team and inspire the adoption of advanced analytics and data science across the entire breadth of our organization.
We also need you to provide technical expertise on the front-end and back-end of modern web application development. Depending upon your qualifications, you may serve as a team lead and primary developer. The Lab is constantly creating new data visualization techniques and tools to meet a wide range of user needs. You would have a large degree of freedom to propose new concepts, implement solutions, and the freedom to explore new architectures and technologies.
Other responsibilities include providing guidance and support to junior developers and interns, providing technical guidance to management, and participating in code reviews.
• PhD or Master’s Degree in computer science, applied statistics, data mining, machine learning, physics, or a related quantitative discipline.
• You are passionate about asking and answering questions in large datasets, and you are able to communicate that passion to leadership and engineers. You have a keen desire to solve business problems, and live to find patterns and insights within structured and unstructured data. You propose analytics strategies and solutions that challenge and expand the thinking of everyone around you.
• You are an expert in analyzing large, complex, multi-dimensional datasets with a variety of tools (or you develop your own).

This position is eligible for all of the benefits shared by other faculty at the University including eligibility to join either the Maryland State Pension System or one of the optional retirement programs on your first day of hire. You are also eligible to receive health benefits, tuition remission, and to participate in University‐ sponsored insurance programs such as long‐term disability insurance, life insurance, supplemental retirement annuities and deferred compensation plans. Paid leave is accrued proportionately based on the number of days worked and includes 22 days of annual leave, 3 days personal leave, 15 designated holidays and 15 sick days per year.
