The Center for Advanced Transportation Technology (CATT) Laboratory, at the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering, is the leading transportation information analysis, visualization, and user interface design laboratory in the country. Our products and services are used by thousands of public safety agencies, state and local departments of transportation, public officials, and consultants every day. We provide an integrated product suite of situational awareness tools for emergency managers, and also provide leading edge data analytics products for transportation planners and consultants. These products and services are rapidly changing the way governments do business and make important decisions.

The CATT Lab is looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Software Technical Lead.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Reposted. The Software Technical Lead will lead a team of 5-7 professional software developers, and 5-10 software development interns in an agile development organization. This position requires a strong problem solver who is capable of understanding the problem, performing analysis and trade studies to offer potential solutions, and then breaking the selected solution down into individual tasks and delegating those tasks to the team members for implementation.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 5-7 professional software developers and 5-10 software development interns.
  • Understand the problem and develop an architecture to solve the problem.
  • Break down the work, estimate effort to complete tasks, and delegate to team members.
  • Proactively report on work progress to management.
  • Perform hands-on development on to support the team when necessary.
  • Support the quick development process in an agile framework.
  • Work on several different projects at once, and meet demanding deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 3 years of hands-on software development experience.
• Minimum of 1 years in Agile or Scrum environment.
• Team leadership/management experience.
• Strong analytical problem solving skills.
• Ability to effectively delegate work, follow up, and provide progress reports.

This position requires a strong problem solver who is capable of understanding the problem, performing analysis and trade studies to offer potential solutions, and then breaking the selected solution down into individual tasks and delegating those tasks to the team members for implementation.


Candidates should be strong developers, especially in regard to developing architecture. Candidates should be organized, highly motivated, and have a focus on innovation. Candidates should enjoy working in a fast paced work environment that requires frequent interaction with a diverse group of employees as well as internal and external customers.


  • 5 years or more of related experience.

  • Experience in performing trade studies and researching the solution space.

  • Strong understanding of client/server architectures.

  • Knowledge and experience with web services.

  • Exposure to Big Data processing frameworks using distributed computing (Hadoop ecosystem).
